The history of Mohonk Preserve in New York dates back to 1869 when Quaker brothers Albert and Alfred Smiley purchased Lake Mohonk and built the Mohonk Mountain House. The brothers, who were born in Maine in 1828 and worked as teachers before becoming innkeepers, originally bought a 10-room inn and tavern on 280 acres as a summer home for their family and friends. Over the years, the property has been expanded and renovated to become a National Historic Landmark that has hosted many notable guests, including presidents, artists, and authors. The resort has also been featured in several films and television shows, including The Road to Wellville (1994), Blue Bloods, and Upload.

The Mohonk Preserve's origins as a conservation area began in 1963 when the Smiley family, friends, and supporters established the Mohonk Trust to protect the area's natural landscape. The Trust has since acquired land and grown to become Mohonk Preserve Inc., which now manages over 8,000 acres of forests, fields, streams, and other environments. The Preserve also maintains natural history collections that include herbarium specimens, mammal and bird specimens, and more than 10,000 index cards of handwritten and typed observations. These collections support the Preserve's land management, educational programs, and conservation efforts.

There are many places in NY to enjoy that many have no idea. We are originally from Central/North NY , we know many interesting places. One in particular is the John Dillon Park, 200 Acre park on Long Lake, NY that was originally done up for the disabled. I visited it once, a few years ago and it was stunning views and loved how they worked to be able to help the disabled.

Interesting.  Besides supporting Veterans I am very interested in focusing on disabled needs.

Might be good to work with you to make a Topic just on the Park.   I myself have a strange disability so have a handicap tag on the Camry.   I was stung by Portuguese Man of War jellyfish when I was 8yrs old from the crotch and down my legs.  They had me out cold on Morphine for 2 weeks.  Major nerve damage, but in a weird way, as I am generally fine and can walk, every once in a while one (or both) of my legs will just "turn off"  and go limp.  Such fun.  I'm well know for falling down stairs in Jr. High school. Since I have a lot of practice with it I manage OK but have a great respect for those who are less fortunate in that.

FYI, I have also worked with the Blind / Deaf communities most of my life as well.

Alan, sorry you have to go through that and prayers you are able to. What ever you need, if I can help, just let me know. I have worked with some blind and deaf in local school district and other program I worked at, but not much. I know about some tech for them that we were trained on . I have worked with many types of disabilities throughout the years and other programs and schools. Just let me know. Richard stated you were from the old RV site, glad we have some here. Enjoy.
