The United States Coast Guard celebrates its birthday on August 4th each year. In 1790, Secretary of the Treasury Alexander Hamilton, also known as the "father of the Coast Guard", lobbied Congress to fund the construction of 10 vessels to help enforce tariffs and taxes and combat smuggling along the coastlines. Congress authorized the construction on August 4th, 1790, which is now celebrated as the Coast Guard's birthday. The Coast Guard was originally called the "Revenue Marine Service". 

 

Today, the Coast Guard is a federal law enforcement agency and military force that protects the United States in peacetime and war. Its core values include honor, respect, and devotion to duty.
